After having already covered the verbs of the first group as well as the auxiliaries être and avoir, I focus here on the frequent verbs of the third group. I begin by reviewing the fundamental structure of the past tense: the auxiliary verb être or avoir conjugated in the present tense + the past participle of the verb. I emphasize the importance of knowing the conjugation of auxiliaries in the present tense. I then explain the past participle of several irregular verbs used with the auxiliary verb avoir: prendre → pris dire → dit faire → fait voir → vu pouvoir → pu vouloir → voulu Then I present two verbs that are conjugated with the auxiliary verb être: venir → ven(e)(s) partir → parti(e)(s) I explain the rule for agreement of the past participle with the subject when using the auxiliary verb être, detailing the different endings according to gender and number. The video contains several practical exercises: Completing sentences with the correct auxiliary verb Conjugating verbs in the past tense with the auxiliary verb "avoir" (have) Using the verbs "venir" (come) and "partir" (participle) in the past tense with the auxiliary verb "être" (be) Transforming sentences from the present tense to the past tense To help your child memorize these conjugations, I recommend copying the past participles using different colors. My advice: To support your child in learning the past tense of 3rd group verbs, here are some practical tips you can implement in your daily life. Memorizing irregular past participles requires repetition and practice. Take advantage of everyday moments to have your child use these verbs. For example, at dinner, ask them to describe their day using the past tense: "What did you do today at school? What interesting things did you see?" These natural conversations are an opportunity to use the verbs "to do," "to see," "to take," and many others. You can also play the "past participle game" during a car ride or while waiting for an appointment. Say a verb in the infinitive and ask your child to give its past participle, then switch roles. To reinforce the distinction between verbs that conjugate with "avoir" and those that conjugate with "être," create two colorful posters together: one for verbs with "avoir" and one for verbs with "être." Your child can gradually add new verbs. Don't hesitate to gently correct your child when they make a mistake, without discouraging them. For example, if they say "I left," you can rephrase correctly: "You mean: I left." This gentle correction allows them to naturally integrate the correct form. Reading is also an excellent way to familiarize themselves with the passé composé. Read stories together and point out the verbs in the passé composé that you come across. You can even transform a text in the present tense into one in the passé composé as a fun exercise. Finally, remember that learning takes time and mistakes are part of the process. Recognize your child's progress and celebrate their successes, even small ones. Self-confidence is a powerful driving force for learning. Learning objectives: Know the past participles of common irregular 3rd group verbs. Distinguish between verbs conjugated with the auxiliary verb avoir and those conjugated with the auxiliary verb être. Master the agreement of the past participle according to the auxiliary verb used and the gender/number of the subject.
