In it, I explain an essential concept in civic and moral education: the difference between what belongs to each individual, what is shared in the classroom, and what belongs to everyone in society. In this video, students first discover what personal belongings are, such as their pencil case or schoolbag, for which they are directly responsible. They then learn to recognize shared items, such as tables, chairs, or the ball used during recess, which belong to the entire class and which everyone must treat with care. Finally, I introduce the concept of the commons in its broadest sense: air, water, forests, beaches, public amenities like benches or bus shelters, which belong to all of society. I explain to the students that when a common good is damaged, it's families' money, through taxes, that is used to repair or replace it. And while an object is broken, no one can use it. Taking care of our surroundings, therefore, isn't just about avoiding breaking things: it's also about thinking about others who will use them after us. When you're in a park, on public transport, or in any public place, you can simply ask him who owns which bench, tree, or trash can. This kind of small conversation, even a short one, reinforces ideas much better than a lesson. At home, you can also give him concrete responsibilities related to shared family items. Putting away shared toys, turning off the light when leaving a room, turning off the tap while brushing his teeth. These aren't big things, but for your child, each action reinforces the idea that taking care of what belongs to everyone is a normal and natural act, not a chore. If you see him neglecting a shared object or throwing something on the ground, you don't need to make a big deal out of it. A simple question is often enough: "What if everyone did the same thing? What would it look like?" This way of reframing the question encourages him to think for himself rather than simply obeying. And then there's something very powerful about valuing what he does well. When you see him pick up a piece of litter without being asked, or point out a leaky faucet, a simple "it's exactly this kind of gesture that makes a difference" shows him that these small actions have real value. Learning Objectives: Distinguish between personal matters, collective matters, and common goods. Understand that common goods belong to everyone and that their degradation has concrete consequences for everyone. Adopt responsible behaviors to take care of what is shared.
