The debate surrounding a potential pardon for former president Pedro Castillo has once again sparked controversy in Peruvian politics. Various authorities have commented on the viability of such a measure and its political implications in the context of the upcoming elections. The discussion arose after a new pardon request was made public for Castillo, who remains imprisoned in Barbadillo following the attempted coup of December 7, 2012. During a television program, it was noted that there have already been several attempts to secure the former president's release. "There have been six attempts to get the former president, the coup leader, the man who on December 7 tried to close Congress, tried to arrest the Attorney General, tried to seize control of the media, released from prison," Milagros Leiva stated on her program. The Ministry of Justice and Human Rights issued a statement rejecting reports circulating in the media. “The Ministry of Justice and Human Rights informs that the document broadcast on a news program regarding an alleged report recommending presidential pardons for inmate Pedro Castillo Terrones is false,” the entity stated. This position was also supported by the President of Congress, Fernando Rospigliosi, who maintained that the measure lacks legal basis. “The coup leader Pedro Castillo cannot be pardoned since he has appealed the sentence he received in the first instance. Therefore, from that perspective, it is absolutely impossible for him to be pardoned,” Rospigliosi affirmed. The head of Parliament added that any pardon would require the signature of the Minister of Justice and recalled that the Minister himself has already publicly stated that he will not support that possibility. “I believe it is absolutely impossible for him to be pardoned,” he reiterated. The issue also shifted to the electoral arena after statements attributed to presidential candidate Roberto Sánchez regarding Castillo's potential release should he come to power were brought to light. ALLISON DENOUNCES ATTEMPT TO SAW HIS CANDIDACY FOR LIMA During another segment of the program “Esta Noche,” the mayor of Magdalena, Francis Allison, rejected claims that he was politically linked to Roberto Sánchez after a photograph was circulated on social media. The mayor explained that the image was taken in August 2025, when Sánchez visited the municipality in his capacity as a congressman during a week of parliamentary representation. “They’ve taken a photo posted by Roberto Sánchez on his Twitter account dated August 25, 2025. That was last year, when he wasn’t even a candidate,” he stated. Allison asserted that the dissemination of the photograph is intended to damage his political aspirations in Metropolitan Lima. “I’m a candidate for Lima, and reliable polls place me in a very strong position, and evidently, as I said at the beginning, they’re afraid of me; they want to destroy me as a candidate,” he affirmed.
