Regressive Progress was born from a simple challenge I set myself. Looking back over my recent mixes, I realised I'd developed a habit of always reaching for my absolute favourite tracks - my personal "5 out of 5" selections. There was nothing wrong with that, but I wondered how many genuinely excellent records I'd unintentionally overlooked simply because they weren't at the very top of my list. So this mix became an experiment. Could I build an engaging journey almost entirely from those "4 out of 5" tracks? Music I loved, but perhaps hadn't given the attention it deserved. The result surprised me. As so often happens with my mixes, I didn't over-plan the journey. I selected a pool of tracks that felt right together, pressed record and let instinct take over. Most of the tracks are played close to their full length, allowing each one the time and space to breathe. The transitions themselves are deliberately simple; I wanted the music to do the talking rather than the mixing. Although the original track BPMs shown below don't reflect how the mix unfolds, there's actually a gradual manual increase in tempo across the recording, beginning at around 123 BPM and finishing at approximately 135 BPM. It's a subtle progression designed to be felt rather than noticed. Musically, the mix draws influence from ambient soundscapes, minimal grooves, deep tech, progressive house, tribal rhythms and cinematic textures. Older and newer productions sit comfortably alongside one another, not out of nostalgia, but because great music doesn't stop being relevant simply because time has passed. One track deserves a special mention. Andrew Bayer's "End Of All Things" was chosen as the opener because its cinematic scale immediately creates the atmosphere I wanted. It reminded me of the soundtrack from Oblivion, a film whose music has always resonated with me, and it sets the emotional tone for everything that follows. Towards the latter stages, tracks such as Konga Bonga deliberately bridge genres, acting as musical stepping stones rather than destinations. Rather than chasing a conventional peak-time climax, the set gradually evolves before arriving exactly where I wanted it to finish: with Luttrell's beautifully uplifting Out Of Me. If you've listened to many of my mixes, you'll know I have a habit of ending not with maximum energy, but with warmth, reflection and a shared sense of optimism. Looking back, Regressive Progress became far more than an experiment. It reminded me that some of the most rewarding journeys aren't built from the obvious choices, but from rediscovering music that deserved another chance to shine.
