DJ Ambler Fury - Lost Souls | Classic 2-Step, UK Garage, Scouse House & Trance Journey (Live DJ Mix)

Lost Souls marks another small but important milestone in my DJ journey. By this point I'd moved away from recording onto standalone CD-R recorders and had started recording directly to a laptop. While that wasn't a revolutionary change in itself, it does help date the mix. Recordable CDs of the time held around 74 minutes of audio, whereas this set comfortably runs beyond that. Recording digitally also made preserving my mixes far easier and became the workflow I would use for many years afterwards. More importantly, this is one of those rare recordings that genuinely surprised me. Like many of my favourite sets, there was no grand plan. I simply started playing, recorded the session, then listened back afterwards. My reaction is still one I remember vividly... "F** me... that's gold."* I passed copies around to a few friends and they loved it. There was only one complaint: I'd enthusiastically boosted both the bass and treble during post-production! On modest hi-fi systems it could sound a little excessive. Listening back today, I still wouldn't change it. It captures exactly how I wanted it to feel at the time. Musically, this mix also introduced me to the world of 2-Step and UK Garage. I immediately fell in love with its quirky, syncopated rhythms and unmistakable summer feel. The staccato grooves, shuffled percussion and infectious swing offered something completely different to the straight four-to-the-floor dance music I'd spent years collecting. From that point onwards I actively built a sizeable 2-Step collection and have returned to the genre throughout my DJing life whenever I wanted to inject a different kind of energy into a set. Interestingly, although that exploration eventually led me towards Breaks and other bass-driven genres, Drum & Bass never had quite the same appeal. For me, 2-Step struck the perfect balance between groove, melody and movement without becoming so aggressive that it lost its musicality. Looking back now, Lost Souls represents another example of something I've come to recognise throughout my catalogue: the best mixes often weren't the ones I planned the most carefully. They were the ones where I simply trusted the music, stayed in the moment and only realised what I'd created when I listened back afterwards.
