The UK has broken its record for the highest June temperature in 50 years, and countries like France and Switzerland are also breaking weather records daily. In France, the number of deaths due to the heatwave increased by 8 in just one day, reaching 48, and two people died from heat-related illnesses in Spain as well. Amidst this, an analysis has revealed that the rate of temperature rise in Europe is faster than in other continents. Copernicus, the European Union's climate watchdog, stated that since the mid-1990s, temperatures in Europe have risen by an average of 0.56 degrees Celsius every decade. This is twice as fast as the global average. Experts have cited the speed of Arctic ice melting surrounding northern Europe as the primary cause. They explain that as the frozen ground thaws rapidly, the surface area reflecting sunlight decreases, while the sea and land absorb more heat, thereby accelerating the rise in temperatures. In fact, last year, the amount of snow-covered land in Europe was found to be about one-third less than the average. Another cause cited is decarbonization policies. While reducing carbon dioxide emissions to combat climate change has had a positive impact on the atmosphere, the decrease in aerosols that reflected sunlight has raised temperatures. Additionally, the recent "heat dome phenomenon," where hot air from Africa is trapped in the European atmosphere, is also cited as a contributing factor to the intensified heatwaves.
