The once-blue lake has turned into a massive puddle due to a rampant algal bloom. As a heatwave with maximum temperatures exceeding 40 degrees has persisted across Spain this week, the resulting damage is increasing. The Spanish Ministry of Health estimated that 212 people died due to the hot weather between the 21st and 24th, when the heatwave was most severe. 94% of the estimated deaths were concentrated among the elderly aged 65 and older, who are vulnerable to the heat. ▶ Interview: Vladimir Yepes / Resident of Madrid, Spain "I can't stand the heat. Damage from the heatwave is occurring across Europe. The French government has closed over 13,000 schools and issued heatwave warnings for most regions. In the UK as well, more than 2,000 schools have closed or shortened classes following instances of teachers fainting during lessons.
