SCAFELL Solo Mountain Wild Camp at 3100ft - ascent via Lords Rake & The West Wall Traverse
The Solo Summiteer - Scafell Solo Wild Camp - seeking solitude, the hard way - setting off from Wasdale I decided to take the interesting route up Scafell, via the gully scrambles of Lords Rake and The West Wall Traverse. Exciting ascents for a hill walker like myself and certainly not recommended for the inexperienced or ill equipped, due to the extremely steep, loose, rocky terrain, and the potential of rock fall from above. I pitched my Alpkit Soloist tent at 3100ft, just below the summit of Scafell. My return route the following day included the descent to Foxes Tarn and down Foxes Tarn Gully, before the heading up the 600ft climb to Mickledore. From here I continued to the summit of Scafell Pike (Englands highest mountain) before returning to Wasdale via Hollow Stones and the Brown Tongue path. A 10 mile walk with 4000ft of ascent.
