Taming a Hillside to Build Our Off-Grid Garden (They Said We Couldn't Grow Food Here)
Welcome to Episode 1 of The Hillside Homestead Project! Thank you for joining us on Day 1. Hit SUBSCRIBE to watch us build our life from the ground up: / @thehillsidehomesteadproject We traded our careers in medicine and engineering to build a Net-Zero home on a wild, steep slope. But before we can finish building the house, we have to figure out how to feed ourselves. In our very first full video, we are tackling our biggest challenge yet: the terrain. Watch as we use our Kubota U17 mini excavator to carve a flat terrace into our 30-degree hillside, build a DIY fence to keep the wildlife out, and plant our very first off-grid garden. It was exhausting, muddy, and we made plenty of beginner mistakes—but seeing those first tomatoes grow made every drop of sweat worth it. ⏱️ In this video: 0:00 - Quitting the city for a wild hillside 0:38 - Planning our Off-Grid Garden 12:44 - Preparing the barren land for planting 15:45 - Building a DIY fence to keep the wildlife out 18:55 - Trading a dental explorer for the soil (Planting) #homesteading #OffGridLiving #GardenBuild #DIY #Homestead
