La Guardia Civil rescata a dos montañeros en Gredos

The Civil Guard rescues two missing hikers after an intense search and a complex rescue operation. March 3, 2013. On February 28, the Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (GREIM) of the Civil Guard in El Barco de Ávila (Ávila) was notified that two hikers had gone missing in the Sierra de Gredos mountains. Following inquiries, it was determined that around 11:00 a.m. on the 27th, the hikers had left the ELOLA Refuge on foot towards the Gredos plateau where they had parked their vehicle. The search for these hikers began immediately, initially confirming that the vehicle was parked at the plateau and that the missing hikers had not returned there. Nine members of the GREIM (Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group) and the 112 Emergency Response Team of Castile and León participated in the search, supported by two helicopters, one from the Civil Guard and the other from the 112 Rescue Team. Due to very adverse weather conditions, including a severe snowstorm, the helicopters ceased the search at 6:00 PM on the 28th, and the search continued on foot. At 10:40 AM on March 1st, the two missing individuals were found in the Cueto Alto area, within the municipality of Navalperal de Tormes (Ávila), suffering from severe hypothermia after spending two nights exposed to the elements. They were rescued by the Civil Guard helicopter using a winch and evacuated to the El Barco de Ávila Heliport, where medical services took charge. The identities of those rescued are: V.A.G., 32 years old, resident of Madrid. M.F.C., 33 years old, resident of Pinto (Madrid).
