On June 8, 2026, the government dedicated almost the entire morning press conference to a single topic: teachers' pensions. Three officials—Mario Delgado (Minister of Education), Martí Batres (Minister of Social Security and Services for State Workers), and Rosa Icela Rodríguez (Minister of the Interior)—came out to explain, with graphs, why your retirement will be better. And they did mention some helpful things: salaries have increased, Afore (retirement fund administrator) commissions have decreased, the retirement age has been lowered, and there is a Pension Fund for Well-being that supplements pensions. We acknowledge this on this channel. But listening to the entire 20 minutes, there is ONE phrase that changes the meaning of everything else. It was said by the director of the ISSSTE: the 2007 ISSSTE Law cannot be repealed, nor can the solidarity fund be reinstated, "because the State does not have 20% of GDP, more than 7 trillion pesos," which would be the cost of rebuilding it. In other words: there is no money. The teachers' main demand was rejected, and in its place, they are offering to strengthen PENSIONISSSTE—the only 100% public pension fund administrator (Afore)—which currently manages just 3.6% of accounts, through a VOLUNTARY migration.
