Ruiny zamku w Krupem
A spontaneous trip to the village of Krupe (between Krasnystaw and Chełm) features picturesque castle ruins situated by a pond. A place worth visiting. The ornate first letter of the substantial castle ruins in Krupe stand on the floodplains of a tributary of the Wieprz River. A small lake, located just north of the castle, forms part of the ruins. Unfortunately, the significant tourist attractions of this site are not utilized – the ruins are overgrown with vegetation, making it difficult to imagine what the entire complex once looked like. It consisted of the castle proper, built at the earliest stage, and a bailey with outbuildings, surrounded by a shared wall with four bastions, a moat, and wetlands. It was therefore a very well-fortified stronghold, although the preserved bastion, in addition to its defensive function, also served as a dwelling. Stones and bricks were used as building materials. The castle proper was quadrangular in shape, with two perpendicular residential wings, which also formed part of the perimeter walls, between which was a courtyard. A pentagonal, three-story bastion adjoined the castle proper at one corner. A dry moat separated it from the outer bailey. Entrance to the complex was from the southeast, via a drawbridge and gardens. High walls with window openings, decorated with sgraffito, and topped with an attic remain to this day, testifying to the former splendor of the structure, which was reportedly furnished with great lavishness. Archaeological finds, including beautiful tiles and fragments of fireplaces, confirm this. Unfortunately, the castle is now heavily littered and the walls are sprayed, a result of events organized there by local "elements." Sections of the perimeter walls, including a solitary section from the northeast with a bastion, have survived alongside the castle proper. Next to the castle stands the Rey family manor house from the 18th century. It is fenced, but accessible from the lake. Update: The castle was recently cleared of vegetation and partially developed. Regular events are held there. The Hero - Adventurer The castle in Kruppe became the setting for a novel by Michał Czajkowski, a renowned writer and 19th-century political activist in exile. Its protagonist was Samuel Zborowski, a banished magnate and adventurer, the greatest enemy of Hetman and Chancellor Jan Zamoyski. That's why he was supposed to build a massive castle with seven towers here, near Zamoyski's castles, to irritate him. This is only partially true, as the castle was built by Krupski, and Zborowski merely expanded it. It was also not as large or had the aforementioned seven towers. It quickly became the headquarters of Paweł Orzechowski, Zamoyski's closest associate. Zborowski himself, despite being a bandit, a cruel man, and a traitor who had pacts with foreign monarchs, possessed a unique charisma that led to the creation of numerous literary works that at least partially rehabilitated him. He was particularly venerated among the Cossacks, whom he led during their expedition into Turkish lands. His military achievements and fight against the despotism supposedly represented by the Polish kings Valois and Báthory were commemorated. CHRONOLOGY around 1492 - Jerzy Krupski began the construction of a small castle. No description of this stronghold has survived. 1523 - First mention of the castle in documents. The next owner was Samuel Zborowski of the Jastrzębiec coat of arms and his descendants, the Gnoiński family. Zborowski surrounded the castle with a curtain wall with wooden gun porches. It is known that the castle then had four towers adorned with the Jastrzębiec coat of arms and a gate tower. Additionally, the castle was defended by a moat, floodplains, and a drawbridge. punktor, late 16th century - Paweł Orzechowski bought the castle from the Gnoiński family. He built the northwestern wing with cloisters and large ceremonial halls, and the southwestern wing with a tower. It housed kitchens, pantries, and a dining room. The entire structure was crowned with an attic and cornices. punktor, years 1604-1608 - the castle underwent a significant expansion and reconstruction. A three-story southwestern wing with a large ceremonial hall was built, a bailey with outbuildings was added, an attic was added, and the corner towers were modernized into bastions. The castle was surrounded by two gardens. punktor, 1644 - after the Orzechowski family, the castle frequently changed hands. punktorok. 1656 - During the Swedish Deluge, it was destroyed by the Swedes. 1665 - After a fire, the castle walls were in very poor condition, and the roofs were covered with straw. The entire castle's outbuildings burned down, and temporary shacks were built in their place, providing shelter for residents of nearby villages in case of danger.
