Daniel used a case study to illustrate how to effectively perform a literature review, highlighting the importance of concise and relevant summaries, clear connections to the study's objectives, and the ability to tie findings back to existing research. Advancements in Research Tools Daniel discussed the evolution of research tools, highlighting the advancements in AI and graph databases. He emphasized the use of Perplexity for literature reviews due to its accurate citations and broader knowledge base, while also mentioning ChatGPT's limitations. Daniel introduced Research Rabbit as a valuable tool for connecting and organizing research papers, and recommended using Zotero for managing bibliographies. He also introduced DeepSeek, a new AI tool that can assist with methodological decisions and provide a clear thought process for users. Daniel concluded by discussing the importance of mindful data display in establishing the validity of research findings. Enhancing Data Visualization Techniques Daniel discussed the importance of mindful data visualization, drawing on Edward Tufte's work to highlight how poor data representation can hinder understanding and decision-making. He shared examples of ineffective visualizations and advocated for using bar charts, forest plots, Kaplan-Meier curves, and tables for clearer communication of data. Daniel introduced tools from the Trinetics publication toolkit, including a bar chart maker, forest plot generator, and table editors, to help students and researchers create more effective visualizations. Trinetics Research and Poster Guidelines Daniel shared examples of successful student projects using the Trinetics database, including studies on racial disparities in melanoma, psychiatric disorders in cancer survivors, stroke analysis, and health disparities in asthma treatments. He provided guidance on creating science posters, recommending a 1200-word limit with 2-3 tables, 1-2 graphics, and 5-6 references.
