There's an Italian story that feels a little more ours than others, when it comes to motors. We've all heard it told at least once. We've all treasured it and then, perhaps, passed it on. And this story has left a mark somewhere in everyone's memory, more or less profound. For what it represented for our country. For what it could have been, but wasn't. For what, ultimately, was never understood. This story has never had an official version. And so, over time, it has become mingled with myth and legend. It has shaped itself by twisting itself around the age-old rule of hearsay. It became a giant telephone box, where everyone had something to say. But no one had the facts, the evidence, the testimonies. This is the story of the common rail. And, to avoid mistakes and to restore the meaning of history, we asked the person who actually designed the Italian common rail to tell it. The history of the diesel common rail, one of the most significant innovations in the automotive industry, dates back to the 1980s, with Fiat at the forefront of its development. Initially, diesel was not very popular in Europe due to its limited performance and noise, but with the introduction of the common rail, Fiat believed it could change the game, focusing on reduced fuel consumption and greater efficiency. However, a series of events, including the economic crisis and the departure of engineer Ghidella from Fiat, brought the common rail project to a standstill. Bosch, however, took an interest in the Fiat system, leading to a collaboration that would change the European automotive landscape.
