Il Vulcano (A5335) is a Logistic Support Ship (LSS) of the Italian Navy, 193 meters long and 24 meters wide, designed to ensure operational autonomy for complex naval groups. The vessel integrates functions for replenishment, material transport, medical support, and dual-use capabilities in both civilian and military contexts. It is equipped with Replenishment At Sea (RAS) stations on the sides and stern, capable of simultaneously transferring fuel, potable water, lubricants, food supplies, and ammunition. Operations are carried out using hoses, cranes, and trolley-equipped highlines, designed to ensure safety and continuity even in adverse sea conditions. The holds include refrigerated compartments and modular storage for the transport of special cargo. The propulsion system is diesel-electric, delivering a total of about 36,720 HP, distributed across two independent engine rooms to guarantee redundancy and operational resilience. It is fitted with desalination systems producing tens of thousands of liters of potable water per day. The 6 MW air-conditioning system uses magnetic levitation compressors, a highly efficient solution with reduced maintenance requirements. Il Vulcano can accommodate over 200 personnel during missions. Its logistical autonomy is supported by industrial kitchens, cold storage facilities, and waste management systems compliant with MARPOL international standards. The onboard hangar can host two helicopters with folding blades, supported by a dedicated control tower for flight operations. One of its most advanced modules is the integrated hospital, built according to NATO Role 2/3 standards, featuring an operating room, radiology, CT scanner, analysis laboratory, intensive care unit, and 17 beds. This allows treatment of wartime emergencies as well as deployment in civil protection or humanitarian missions. Il Vulcano is designed to provide continuous support to naval groups in blue-water operations, extending the reach of combat units. At the same time, its modular configuration enables it to operate in international crisis scenarios, evacuation missions, medical assistance, and civil protection, making it a strategic dual-use asset.
