The place, known by the Indians as Guaypacaré ("arm or breast of the crooked lagoon"), was a natural port for the bandeirantes and travelers who headed to Minas Gerais in search of gold. The settlement began with "roças" (small farms) of some colonists. In 1718, the locality, which was a small village in the "sertões de Guaratinguetá" (backlands of Guaratinguetá), became the Parish of Nossa Senhora da Piedade. The big change, however, came on November 14, 1788, when, by decree of the then governor of São Paulo, Bernardo José Maria de Lorena, the parish was elevated to the category of town, receiving the name Lorena in his honor.
