This historic railway ascends from Cosme Velho to the summit of Corcovado, at an elevation of 710 m (2,329 ft), offering stunning views of the city, beaches, and the famous Christ the Redeemer statue. Opened by Emperor Dom Pedro II on October 9, 1884, the railway was originally powered by steam locomotives before being electrified in 1910, the first electrified line in Brazil. In 2019, the railway was modernized with Stadler Rail electric multiple units (EMU), making this historic ride faster and more efficient, reaching speeds of up to 25 km/h (16 mph). There are three trains, each made of two cars. With a maximum incline of 30% and a unique Riggenbach rack system, the train glides effortlessly along the 3.824 km (2.376 mi) track. The railway was built using metre gauge and it is one of the few remaining railways using three-phase electric power with two overhead wires, at 900 V 60 Hz. The trip takes approximately 20 minutes each way, and departures are every 20 minutes, allowing up to 540 passengers per hour to enjoy this scenic route.
