Drone footage of the Demolition of the Clifton Rail Bridge Here are 10 clear facts about the Clifton Rail Bridge replacement project in Penrith — a major infrastructure upgrade on the West Coast Main Line: Location & Purpose: The Clifton Bridge carries the West Coast Main Line (WCML) over the M6 motorway near Penrith in Cumbria — a key rail link between England and Scotland. Reason for Replacement: The existing bridge is almost 60 years old and has reached the end of its design life, with structural issues that have led to weight restrictions and only one train being allowed across at a time. New Design: A 130-metre single-span steel bridge is being built to replace the old structure, improving safety and capacity. Project Cost: The project is valued at around £60 million, funded and delivered by Network Rail with contractor Skanska. Construction Timeline: Preparatory work began in 2025, with the new bridge steelwork completed on site ahead of installation. Major Closure Window: The old bridge is being demolished and the new one installed during a two-week blockade of the WCML from the end of December 2025 into January 2026. M6 Motorway Closures: To enable safe demolition and installation, the M6 motorway is fully closed in both directions between junctions 39 (Shap) and 40 (Penrith) on two consecutive weekends in January 2026. Rail Disruption: The West Coast Main Line section through this area will be closed for around 16 days, requiring train operators to plan alternative services and diversions. Assembly Strategy: The new bridge sections were fabricated (many from outside the region) and assembled in a purpose-built compound adjacent to the motorway before being moved into place on specialist transport modules. Long-Term Benefits: Once installed, the new bridge should significantly increase capacity and reliability on this busy rail corridor and is expected to serve for decades — estimated up to at least 120 years.
