If hiking alone, using trekking poles for balance is recommended. In summer, simply ensuring you get enough minerals (like salt candy) and carrying plenty of water should be sufficient. There are no dangerous sections. Regardless of the season, Hokkaido mountains carry a risk of hypothermia in adverse weather conditions. Standard hiking gear is essential. Prepare water, emergency food, and rain gear. Even in summer, don't forget heating items like hand warmers. Gloves, a neck warmer, and a knit hat are also recommended to retain body heat. A thermal blanket is also a good idea in case of an emergency. ・As a general precaution against bears, please carry a bear bell, and also a whistle for signaling in case of an emergency. Whistles are effective against bears. We have also produced a video comparing different whistles, so please take a look.    • 熊対策の笛吹いたら驚きの結果…１３種類の笛を吹いてみた   Although it is a neighboring mountain range, two incidents of brown bear encounters occurred in the Niseko mountain range last year (2025). In one case, the person had bear spray, so they were able to deal with the situation calmly. Therefore, we ask that you carry bear spray in anticipation of similar incidents occurring here on Mt. Mekunai. Most recently, an incident of brown bear encounter occurred on Mt. Tomuraushi in the Daisetsuzan mountain range, where all four people did not have bear spray and were unable to move, requiring rescue by a Hokkaido Prefectural Police helicopter. The fact that some hikers in the Daisetsuzan mountain range don't carry bear spray is something I, as a hiker who climbs mountains in Hokkaido, feel I should raise. There are ○× and ← markings on the rocky section indicating the official route, so as long as you don't miss them, you won't get lost. The area around the col in the story is a place where brown bears may pass through, and in the future, we may see traces of them. Wear a bear bell as a basic precaution, and use a whistle if you can't see ahead on curves. ◆Timing for Hiking Anytime except winter. There are many early summer flowers, so late May to early July is recommended. ~My Impressions~ As you can see, the sirens are quite loud in early June. However, this is only up to the 1st and 2nd stations where you can find thick dwarf bamboo, so once you pass that point, you can enjoy a quiet hike. It's said to be a relatively minor mountain among the Niseko mountains, but even on weekdays, there are plenty of other hikers, which provides a sense of security.
