Muroran is suitable for beginners, so in summer, simply bringing plenty of water and ensuring you get enough minerals (like salt candy) should be sufficient. There are no dangerous sections. In winter, getting lost is common, so those engaging in backcountry or winter mountaineering should be well-prepared for snow-covered mountain rescue situations. Regardless of the season, there is a risk of hypothermia in Hokkaido mountains during inclement weather. General mountaineering equipment is essential. Prepare water, emergency food, and rain gear, and even in summer, don't forget heating equipment such as hand warmers. Gloves, a neck warmer, and a knit hat are also recommended to retain body heat. A thermal blanket should also be prepared in case of an emergency. As a general precaution against bears, please carry a bear bell, and also a whistle for signaling in case of emergency. Whistles are effective against bears. Recent YAMAP activity records show comments such as, "I felt uneasy because I didn't have bear spray." Encounters are possible, especially on weekdays or when there are fewer people around, particularly during the traverse to Kamuinupuri. Please use the basic bear bell and whistle to let bears know of your presence, and consider carrying bear spray as training for tackling mountain areas with many brown bears in the future. ◆Regarding the course The course markers and other information are explained in the video. There is generally no risk of getting lost. Don't forget to bring clothes to wear in the rain and drinking water. The water at Shiratori Hutte wasn't running at the time, but it was back on a week later. It's best to prepare water in advance, as the water supply might be cut off at times. Remember that you can get regular Muroran tap water at the free campsite at the foot of the mountain. It was delicious water. ◆Timing for Hiking Anytime except winter. Early summer seems to have many flowers, so early June to late July would be interesting for flower viewing. Winter sees many cases of people getting lost, so safety precautions are necessary. ~My Impressions~ Muroran-dake is an easy mountain to climb, suitable for beginners and a popular local mountain. Recently, traces of brown bears have been found, so bear precautions will continue to be necessary. Basic bear bells are sufficient at this time, but if you've seen or encountered brown bears on the trail two or more times, you should prepare bear spray or refrain from climbing. I stayed the night before at the free campsite in the foothills park, but late at night, young people were driving up in their cars for a drive. It's a hidden gem with a great night view from the hilltop. While they didn't leave any trash, it's a free campsite without any staff, so there's a possibility of food waste being generated. If a bear were to become accustomed to being fed, the risk of human injury would increase dramatically. In fact, when I descended the mountain, I found smelly garbage in a convenience store bag on the forest road next to the free campsite, and there were signs that it had been torn open by a red fox. Therefore, if there are two or more consecutive sightings of a brown bear, it might be a bear that has been fed before and doesn't run away from people, so I hope Muroran City will consider taking swift action, such as closing hiking trails.
