The result of this commission was The Love for Three Oranges, a satirical opera inspired by a play of the same name by Carlo Gozzi, published in 1761. Prokofiev discovered the work of the Italian writer thanks to the avant-garde director Vsevolod Meyerhold. Inspired by this play, which blends multiple plots and features both fairy-tale characters and characters from the Commedia dell'arte, Prokofiev composed energetic music and wrote the libretto himself in Russian. The premiere took place on December 30, 1921, at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, in a French version. Plot: The jester Truffaldino is tasked by the King of Clubs with curing his son, the prince, of melancholy through laughter, as the prince has been made unhappy by excessive reading of tragic works. However, this task is difficult, especially since Clarice, the king's niece, her lover Léandre, and the witch Fata Morgana are all plotting to get rid of the prince to take his place upon his death. Nonetheless, the prince finally finds amusement when he sees the witch stumble and fall. Furious, the witch decides to take revenge by casting a spell on the prince, causing him to fall in love with three oranges, which are guarded by a terrible cook. With the help of Truffaldino and some magical objects, the prince manages to win the hearts of the three oranges, which transform into three beautiful princesses. Two of them die, but one survives and ends up marrying the prince. 🔥🎧 Full Album available // Prokofiev: Symphonies Nos. 1,4,5,6,7, The Love for Three Oranges, Lieutenant Kijé by Eugene Ormandy 🔥🎧 Choose my streaming platform (Toldrà): https://lnk.to/prokofievormandy Other Album available // Sibelius: Symphonies Nos. 1,2,7 & Orchestral Works by Eugene Ormandy 🎧 Qobuz https://bit.ly/3YosIgu Tidal https://bit.ly/3W0QgGF 🎧 Apple Music https://apple.co/3U9RLlD Deezer http://bit.ly/3hr982z 🎧 Amazon Music https://amzn.to/3YsjPm8 Spotify https://spoti.fi/3iUuMMP 🎧 Youtube Music https://bit.ly/3uQt9CL
