Daudet based his play on the short story of the same title from *Letters from My Windmill (1869): a young countryman falls in love with a young woman from Arles whom he glimpses at the bullring. Although he never sees her again, he persuades his parents to consent to the marriage, only to learn that she may have had a relationship with another man. He abandons the marriage and, to reassure his loved ones, pretends to forget her, but fearing to reveal his true feelings, ultimately chooses death as his refuge. Premiered in Paris on October 1, 1872, at the Vaudeville Theatre, the play was a failure, although the music was more warmly received. Written for a small orchestra of twenty-six musicians, the incidental music score consists of 27 numbers. More than half are brief melodramas lasting only a few measures, while the remaining sections include a prelude, six choruses, entr’actes, and intermezzos. When Bizet later adapted the score into a suite, he expanded the orchestral forces, notably adding the then very recent saxophone. He conceived the suite along the lines of a classical four-movement symphony and, in doing so, departed from the order of the original story. This became Suite No. 1*, first performed on November 10, 1874, at the Cirque d’Hiver under the direction of Jules Pasdeloup. In 1879, four years after Bizet’s death, Ernest Guiraud structured *Suite No. 2 according to the same principle, and it enjoyed tremendous success from its very first performance. Suite No. 1 consists of a Prelude, Minuet, Adagietto, and Carillon. The Prelude opens with the *Marcho dei Rei*, a Provençal tune dating from the eighteenth century. The march is followed by an Andante based on the saxophone theme associated with Frédéri’s mentally disabled brother, and the Prelude concludes with Frédéri’s own stormy music. The Minuet is in fact the Intermezzo separating the second and third acts of Daudet’s play. Its allegro giocoso in C minor is followed by an extended trio in A-flat major. In the play, the Adagietto serves as the backdrop to the conversation between the two elderly characters, Balthazar and Mother Renaud, who meet again after fifty years and recall the feelings they both left unspoken in their youth. Here, Bizet achieves remarkable warmth and delicacy without the slightest trace of sentimentality. The Carillon is a short allegretto moderato in E major, based on a repeated three-note figure, and serves as the introduction to Act III. 🔥🎧 Full Album available // Bizet: Carmen & L’Arlésienne Suites by Eugene Ormandy 🔥🎧 Choose my streaming platform: https://lnk.to/bizetsuitesormandy 🔥🎧 Other Album available // The Choir of the Paris Opera (Bizet 'Carmen' ...) 🔥🎧 Choose my streaming platform: https://lnk.to/parisoperachoirlaforge
