Join me as I walk through Waterloo Street Dumpling Festival 2026 in Singapore - 四马路端午节粽子市集 . This traditional rice dumpling fair brings together popular dumpling vendors including Eastern Dumplings and Joo Chiat Kim Choo, offering different varieties of zongzi (粽子 bak chang). Besides the dumpling stalls, the street is also filled with everyday market stalls selling fruits, household items, clothing, dried goods and more, creating a lively neighbourhood atmosphere. I also took a walk around the nearby Kwan Im Temple area, where visitors continue their daily prayers and activities during the festival period. According to legend, Qu Yuan was known for his loyalty and concern for his country. After being exiled following political struggles, he was devastated when Chu was defeated by its enemies. He later ended his life by jumping into the Miluo River. Local people tried to rescue him by rushing out in boats, beating drums and splashing the water to scare away fish. This is said to have inspired the tradition of Dragon Boat racing. As his body could not be found, villagers threw packets of sticky rice wrapped in leaves into the river to prevent fish from disturbing his remains. These rice dumplings became the traditional zongzi (粽子 known locally as bak chang) enjoyed during the festival today.
