Monster Party (NES) - Hard Left Turn at the Shrubbery (Stage 1 Themes)

Here's a tone I called Hard Left Turn at the Shrubbery, which is an arrangement I did of the two Stage 1 theme songs from Monster Party, released in 1989 on the NES. Monster Party is one of those several very weird games on the NES, that in spite of its heavy censorship policies, managed to be released with a number of questionable elements. Most notable is the transformation that happens in the first stage when you pass the conspicuous green tree in the background transforming the stage into a real bloody mess! I wrote this arrangement for dwelling of duels, and wanted to mimic the experience in the game where it really has quite the mood change when the stage transforms. For the upbeat first theme, I stayed mostly true to the arrangement, adding only some keyboard strings playing a modified version of the main melody and bass line at the same time, and added some linear drums on the 16th note triplet grid to match the weird tremolo melody in the original tune. For the bloody theme, I was influenced by the outro of a tune called The Sky is Red, by Leprous, and wanted to build the theme from a quiet, mellow solo guitar, up into a full raging evil orchestra. Once the clean solo guitar introduces my spin on the original motif, roughly every pass through the theme, I add at least two instruments. All the orchestral instruments were written on the fly and recorded as written, so I really only had a vague idea of what the final monstrous arrangement would sound like. It got a little sonically crowded towards the end with some instruments getting a bit lost in the cacophony, but I was rather happy with how thick it got! Hopefully you got a kick out of this cover, I really had fun seeing how big an arrangement I could make of a relatively simple theme, and it turns out, quite large!
