Hello and welcome to Old Ways Gardening and Prepping.🍀 This is a two part merged video. The first part is from when we were harvesting elderberries back in August and the second part is passionflower vine harvested in my main herb garden. It is a blessing to have been able to harvest wild growing passionflower as well as the ones I have growing in my main herb garden. It is such a beautiful flowering vine as well as the bonus maypop fruit that come from them. Happy to see the native plants still growing and thriving in their native habitat. Passionflower is very easy to grow, in fact in can be quite rambunctious if not harvested regularly. The vine is cold hardy to zone 6 (zone 5 in sheltered locales), and needs a trellis, wall, fence, or plant to climb upon. It often thrives for several years sending up new shoots far from the parent vine with its copious runners, and then the whole colony will up and die. Its disappearance is not related to the coldness of the winter, it appears to be a short-lived perennial. So always allow several maypop fruit to fully ripen in order to harvest the fruits for the seeds. Passionflower prefers full sun and is relatively drought tolerant, but will flower in part shade, but not as robust if in full sun. The medicinal benefits of this beautiful vine are many and we will delve in to them. As always do your own research to see if this amazing medicinal plant is right for your usage. It is a very well known nervine and is taken as a sedative and muscle relaxer so remember to not operate a vehicle or heavy machinery while taking the tincture or tea. Helps to control anxiety, depression, hysteria as well as ADHD to calm one down and improve the ability to get a restful sleep at night. It's ability to help with menopausal symptoms as in hot flashes, night sweats and insomnia has been studied extensively with successful results. Known to help those with hypertension, but be careful if on heart medication so that your blood pressure does not drop too low. Take the tincture or tea with precautions. Known as a very important antioxidant and a even bigger anti-inflammatory. Above listed are the most important medicinal benefits of using passionflower tincture there are a few more and encourage you to do your own research as well. Passionflower leaves are the only food source for gulf fritillary caterpillars (Agraulis vanillae, Nymphalidae). Other butterfly larvae also feed on passionflower leaves. So be careful not to kill them and allow them to grow. Hope this video encourages you to also grow and or wild forage passionflower. It is a beautiful and very medicinal vine to have thriving in your herb garden. If you have any questions please feel free to ask them in the comment section below I will answer them as soon as possible. Take care and have a blessed day.
