[2001 Japan Derby (GI) Race Commentary] In the first Japan Derby of the 21st century, Agnes Tachyon, who had won the Satsuki Sho and was undefeated in four races, was forced to withdraw from the race due to tendonitis. Jungle Pocket, who finished third in the Satsuki Sho after a slow start, was the favorite, beating out Kurofune, who was coming off a win in the NHK Mile Cup and aiming to become the first foreign-bred horse to win the race. Jungle Pocket, who started from the outside gate (18th) and steadily pursued the back of the middle of the long, vertical pack, made a spurt in the straight. He moved to the front at the crucial moment, but then managed to get past Kurofune, who lacked the power to pull away from the pack. Finally, he outstrips Dantsu Frame, who was following him, and crosses the finish line by a length and a half. He has risen to the top of the racehorses born in 1998, who are still often called the "strongest generation in history."
