"Retrospective Yamaguchi 2025" looks back on events in Yamaguchi Prefecture. This episode focuses on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, which has been adopted as a means of restoring the JR Mine Line. To explore what BRT really is, we visited JR Kyushu's Hitahikosan Line BRT, a pioneering example of BRT. The Hitahikosan Line, which was damaged in the 2017 Kyushu heavy rains, was restored as a BRT system over a six-year period at a cost of 2.6 billion yen. Dedicated roads and tunnels utilizing the former railway tracks ensure punctuality and speed. The number of stops has increased from 12 during the railway era to 36, including those located on the grounds of hospitals, schools, and roadside stations. The number of trains has increased by 1.5 times, and the number of riders has also increased slightly. The trains are equipped with USB charging ports and barrier-free access, and are designed with students and the elderly in mind. Meanwhile, delays remain an issue on public road sections, and efforts are being made to improve them by setting passing stations and making location information visible. Sake breweries and local governments along the line, which initially opposed the BRT, are now taking on the challenge of using the BRT to host events, redevelop stations, and turn them into tourist attractions. Regions that have lost their rail lines are creating new excitement centered around transportation. What do the hints for BRT conversion seen in the history of the Hitahikosan Line indicate for the future of the JR Mine Line? We consider options to protect local transportation.
