In this excerpt from the lecture "Functional Anatomy for the Trainer," we explore intervertebral discs without horror stories or catastrophizing. What a disc is, what it's made of, why it needs an annulus fibrosus and nucleus pulposus, and why the spine shouldn't be viewed as a fragile structure easily worn down by normal stress. We discuss how discs adapt to movement: what happens during strength training, cyclic loading, and running. We also discuss the idea of movement optimism: not a naive "do whatever you want," but a more realistic view of the body's tissues, which are capable of responding to stress, recovering, and changing. We also explore what a herniated disc is and why MRI findings don't always equate to pain. Many people without symptoms can have bulges, herniations, and other changes, so an MRI alone doesn't explain everything a person is feeling. This short 8-minute segment is for trainers, movement teachers, and anyone who wants to understand the spine through anatomy, adaptation, and an evidence-based approach, rather than through the fear of bending, running, and strength training.
