The Berlengas Archipelago is a small archipelago located on the Portuguese continental shelf, 5.7 miles from Cape Carvoeiro (Peniche). It is formed by a set of small islands and coastal reefs distributed by three groups: Ilha da Berlenga, the Estelas and the Farilhões-Forcadas. The larger islands reach a height of about 90 m, but the remaining islets and rocks are small, sometimes just outcropping the sea surface. The Berlengas Archipelago has a biological heritage of high conservation interest, both in terms of its terrestrial insular ecosystem, which includes endemic plants, protected habitats and shelters the nesting of several species of endangered seabirds, as well as in terms of the surrounding vulnerable marine ecosystem, one of the richest in Portuguese waters. The complex geomorphology of the islands and islets that make up the archipelago is also unique. Human presence and influence over time are inseparable from the archipelago. O Arquipélago das Berlengas é um pequeno arquipélago situado na plataforma continental portuguesa, a 5,7 milhas do Cabo Carvoeiro (Peniche). É formado por um conjunto de pequenas ilhas e recifes costeiros distribuídos por três grupos: Ilha da Berlenga, as Estelas e os Farilhões-Forcadas. As ilhas de maior dimensão atingem uma altura de cerca de 90 m, mas as restantes ilhéus e rochedos são de pequenas dimensões, por vezes apenas aflorando a superfície do mar. O Arquipélago das Berlengas apresenta um património biológico com elevado interesse de conservação, quer ao nível do seu ecossistema insular terrestre que engloba plantas endémicas, habitats protegidos e acolhe a nidificação de várias espécies de aves marinhas ameaçadas, como ao nível do vulnerável ecossistema marinho envolvente, um dos mais ricos das águas portuguesas. Também a complexa geomorfologia das ilhas e ilhéus que formam o arquipélago é única. A presença e influência humana ao longo dos tempos são indissociáveis do arquipélago.
