Guimarães is a Portuguese city located in the District of Braga, in the North region and sub-region of Ave and in the former province of Minho. It is a historic city, with a crucial role in the formation of Portugal. Guimarães is one of the most important historic cities in the country, with its historic center inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2001, which definitely makes it one of the largest tourist centers in the region. Guimarães is often referred to as "Cradle City", due to the fact that the administrative center of the Condado Portucalense was established there by D. Henrique and his son D. Afonso Henriques could have been born in this city and fundamentally because of the historical importance that the Battle of São Mamede, fought on the outskirts of the city on June 24, 1128, had for the formation of nationality. However, the needs of the Reconquest and protection of territories to the south took this same center to Coimbra in 1129. Afonso Henriques poder ter nascido nesta cidade e fundamentalmente pela importância histórica que a Batalha de São Mamede, travada na periferia da cidade em 24 de junho de 1128, teve para a formação da nacionalidade. Contudo, as necessidades da Reconquista e de proteção de territórios a sul levou esse mesmo centro para Coimbra em 1129.
