Walkning barefoot on different natural grounds also builts up the foot muscles, which helps with knee, leg and back pain and prevents bad posture and deformaties. From the mental side, barefoot walking is also a spiritual praxis called grounding. According to this barefoot walking works like a meditation, because you're feeling so much, that the senses are overtaking the brain and it becomes easy to stop thinking.
