Webinar #32 “All About Reticulata Iris & Creating Amazing New Colors and Patterns” by Alan McMurtrie
Webinar #32 “All About Reticulata Iris & Creating Amazing New Colors and Patterns” by Alan McMurtrie Welcome to the amazing world of reticulata iris. These are the first iris to bloom each year, just as the snow is disappearing. Did you know there is a stoloniferous reticulata iris that was discovered in 2013 by Leonid Bondarenko and Dimitrii Zubov? This is to say, it sends a runner under the ground and a new bulb forms at the end of it (will show you this happening). How can you create an orange reticulata? What is possible? ...a whole new world you never knew existed ! About the Presenter Alan McMurtrie is a retired electrical engineer, living in Toronto Canada. Since retiring, he has been able to work full time on his “hobby” as a hybridizer of bulbous irises, notably Iris reticulata hybrids. Alan’s hybridising efforts began in the 1980s with named hybrids in the late 1990s. In the 2000s, he was seeing a range of colours, showing that orange is possible in reticulatas. His first tetraploid hybrids appeared in 2015. Alan has won numerous awards for his work, including from the Royal Horticultural Society and the Scottish Rock Garden Club. Alan received the British Iris Society’s Sir Michael Foster Memorial Plaque in 2010 for advancements in the genus Iris. He also won the BIS Hybridizer Award in 2016 and was awarded the AIS Hybridizer Medal in 2019 for his groundbreaking work with Iris reticulata.
