Białka Gorge is one of the most unique places in Lesser Poland – a natural border where the Podhale and Spisz regions meet. Here, the Białka River, flowing straight from the Tatra Mountains, has carved its way through limestone rocks for thousands of years, creating a breathtaking landscape. Two monumental formations – Kramnica and Obłazowa – stand like guardians, with the crystal-clear river flowing between them. In this episode, we take you on a journey to Białka Gorge, a nature reserve that blends geology, wildlife, and human history. In Obłazowa Cave, located at the base of one of the cliffs, archaeologists discovered Ice Age animal remains and the world's oldest known boomerang – made from mammoth tusk and dated to about 30,000 years ago! This makes the gorge not only a tourist attraction but also a site of great scientific importance. Walking along the river, you’ll discover incredible biodiversity. Over 100 plant species thrive here in a relatively small area, including alpine varieties brought by the Białka waters from the Tatras. This unique combination makes the reserve stand out across the region. In summer, it’s also a popular leisure spot – the stony riverbanks attract visitors seeking nature and cool water. But Białka Gorge is more than just nature. We also visit Nowa Biała – a Spisz village with a rare urban layout. Its rows of barns, built at the ends of narrow plots, set it apart from other villages. Tragically, in June 2021, a massive fire destroyed over 100 buildings, including many barns and homes. It was a disaster for the residents and a huge loss for the village’s cultural heritage. Today, Nowa Biała is slowly rebuilding, though the scars remain visible. During our visit, we’ll show you the gorge, the village, and one of the best free camper parking spots we've found – perfect for an overnight stay, with rock views, nature access, and proximity to attractions. Białka Gorge is a place where nature, history, and culture meet.
