ചിതലാണ് ഇഷ്ടഭക്ഷണം, കടുവയിലും അപകടകാരി കരടി Sloth bear feeds on fruits, ants and termites

The sloth bear (Melursus ursinus), also known as the Indian bear, is a myrmecophagous bear species native to the Indian subcontinent. It feeds on fruits, ants and termites. It is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, mainly because of habitat loss and degradation. It is the only species in the genus Melursus. സ്ലോത് ബെയർ എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്ന Melursus ursinus ആണ് നമ്മുടെ കാടുകളിൽ കാണുന്ന കരടി. ഇന്ത്യയിലും നേപ്പാളിലും ശ്രീലങ്കയിലും ഒക്കെ ഇവരെ കാണാം. സ്ലോത് ബെയറുകൾ പ്രധാനമായും ഭക്ഷണമാക്കുന്നത് പ്രാണികളെയാണ്. തേനിനുവേണ്ടി മാത്രമല്ല ഉയരമുള്ള മരക്കൊമ്പുകളിൽ വലിഞ്ഞുകയറി തേനീച്ചക്കൂടുകളിൽ നിന്ന് തേനടകൾ തട്ടിയെടുക്കുന്നത്. (തേൻ അധികം കുടിച്ചാൽ കരടിക്കും കഥമാറും.) തേൻ ഇഷ്ടമാണെങ്കിലും അതുപോലെ തന്നെ ഇഷ്ടമാണ് തേനീച്ചക്കൂടുകളിലെ ലർവപ്പുഴുക്കളും മുട്ടകളും. ഇരതേടി നിലത്ത് ഇവർ തപ്പിനടക്കുന്നതത്രയും ഉറുമ്പിനേയും - ചിതലിനേയും തിന്നാനാണ്. മണ്ണിനടിയിലെ കൂടുകൾ ഇവർക്ക് മണത്തറിയാനാകും. കൈകളിലെ കൂർത്തു നീണ്ട നീളൻ നഖങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ട് മണ്ണു നീക്കി പുറ്റുകൾ മാന്തിപ്പൊളിച്ച് ഉള്ളിലെ ചിതലുകളേയും ഉറുമ്പുകളേയും അവയുടെ മുട്ടകളേയും കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളേയും അകത്താക്കും. ഇവരുടെ കീഴ് ചുണ്ടിന്റെയും താടിയുടെയും പ്രത്യേക രൂപം വഴി മൂക്കമർത്തി ഒരു വാക്വം ക്ലീനർ പ്രവർത്തിക്കും പോലെ ചെറുജീവികളെ വലിച്ച് ഉള്ളിലേക്ക് കയറ്റാൻ കഴിയും. മൂക്കിന്റെ ദ്വാരങ്ങൾ പൂർണ്ണമായി അടച്ചു പിടിക്കാനുള്ള കഴിവുണ്ട്. മണ്ണിൽ ഇരതേടലിനായി വാക്വം പരിപാടി നടക്കുമ്പോൾ മൂക്കിൽ പൊടിയും മണ്ണും മണലും ഉറുമ്പും ചിതലും കയറാതെ ഇത് സഹായിക്കും.
