Did ancient people really use monitor lizards to climb walls and rob? ‘ഉടുമ്പ്’ എന്ന് കേൾക്കുമ്പോൾ പോലീസ് സ്റ്റേഷൻ കേഡി ലിസ്റ്റിലെ സ്ഥിരം, തല്ല്-കളവ് കേസ് തല്ലിപ്പൊളികളായ ചിലർക്കുള്ള വിശേഷണപ്പേരിന്റെ ആദ്യഭാഗമായാണ് തോന്നുക. ഉടുമ്പിനെ ആദ്യമായി കാണുന്ന ചെറിയകുട്ടികൾ “ദിനോസാറിന്റെ കുട്ടി” എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ് ചിലപ്പോൾ വാപൊളിച്ച് നിൽക്കുന്നത് കാണാം. അവർകണ്ട കാർട്ടൂണുകളിലേയും സിനിമകളിലേയും ഭീമന്മാരുടെ മിനിയേച്ചറായി അവർക്ക് വേഗം തോന്നും. അത്രമാത്രം ഉണ്ട് സാമ്യം. രണ്ടായി പിളർന്ന നീളൻ നാവ് പാമ്പിനെപ്പോലെ ഇടക്കിടെ പുറത്തേക്ക് നീട്ടിയുള്ള ആ നോട്ടവും നടത്തവും കാണുമ്പോൾ ഒരു ഉൾക്കിടിലം ആർക്കും ഉണ്ടാകും. പക്ഷെ മഹാ സാധുവും പേടിക്കാരുമാണ് ഇവർ. കേരളത്തിൽ ആകെ ഒരിനം ഉടുമ്പ് മാത്രമേ ഉള്ളു , ദേഹത്ത് മഞ്ഞ വരയും കുത്തും ഒക്കെയായി കാണുന്ന പൊന്നുടുമ്പ് സാധാ ഉടുമ്പിന്റെ കുഞ്ഞാണ്. എലികളെയും കീടങ്ങളേയും തിന്നു തീർത്തും , അതുപോലുള്ള പല ശല്യക്കാരായ ജീവികളുടെയും എണ്ണം നിയന്ത്രിച്ചു നിർത്തിയും കൃഷിക്കാർക്ക് വലിയ സഹായം ചെയ്തിരുന്ന ഉപകാരിയായ ജീവിയാണ് ഉടുമ്പ്. ആളുകളുടെ അന്ധവിശാസം ആണ് ഈ സാധുവിനെ ഇല്ലാതാക്കുന്നത്. പണ്ടുമുതലേ പല നാടുകളിലും ഉടുമ്പിൻ്റെ മാംസത്തിനും ചോരയ്ക്കും നെയ്ക്കും അത്ഭുത മാഹാ ശക്തിയുണ്ടെന്ന അന്ധവിശ്വാസം നിലനിന്നിരുന്നു. അവയുടെ നാവിനും ലൈംഗീക അവയവത്തിനും പുരുഷന്മാരിൽ ലൈംഗീക ഉത്തേജനം ഉണ്ടാക്കാനുള്ള കഴിവുണ്ട് എന്ന തെറ്റായ വിശ്വാസം പലനാടുകളിലും നിലനിന്നിരുന്നു. ഉളുക്ക്, വേദന, വാതം എന്നിവക്ക് ഉടുമ്പിൻ മാംസവും ചോരയും കൺകണ്ട ഔഷധമാണെന്ന വിധത്തിൽ നാട്ട് വൈദ്യന്മാരുടെ വ്യാജ പ്രചരണം ഈ പാവത്തിൻ്റെ എണ്ണം നന്നായി കുറച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. അതും കൂടാതെ മന്ത്രവാദത്തിനും ആഭിചാരക്രിയകൾക്കും കൂടി ഇവയെ ചുട്ട്കൊന്നിരുന്നു. ഉടുമ്പിന്റെ ചോര ചൂടോടെ കുടുകുടാ കുടിച്ച്, കട്ടപിടിക്കാതിരിക്കാൻ ഓടി ദഹിപ്പിച്ച് അതിശക്തിമാനാകുന്ന പഴയ കീരിക്കാടന്മാരുടെ വീരകഥകൾ ചില പഴമക്കാരും പറയാറുണ്ട്. അതും വിശ്വസിച്ച് ഉടുമ്പിനെ തിന്നാനും ചോരകുടിക്കാനും പോയാൽ പണി പാളും. എങ്കിൽ കേസുമാത്രമല്ല ഉണ്ടാകുക. ചിലപ്പോൾ മസ്തിഷ്ക രോഗം പിടിപെട്ട് ചത്തുപോയെന്നും വരാം. ഇവയുടെ മാംസത്തിലും രക്തത്തിലും ANGIOSTRONGYLUS CANTONENSIS എന്ന ഇനം പരാദവിരകളുടെ ലാർവകളുടെ സാന്നിദ്ധ്യം കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. അതിനാൽ നന്നായി വേവിക്കാതെ ഇവയുടെ മാംസം കഴിക്കുന്നതും രക്തം കുടിക്കുന്നതും ഇയോസിനോഫിലിക് മെനിഞ്ചൈറ്റിസ് (EOSINOPHILIC MENINGITIS) എന്ന രോഗത്തിന് ചിലപ്പോൾ കാരണമാവാം.
