It towers about 60 meters vertically above Lake Schiffenensee and is considered one of the region’s most significant landmarks. Key Features • Architecture: The complex is 120 meters long in total and comprises 15 different rooms, including a chapel with a bell tower, a sacristy, living quarters such as bedrooms and a kitchen, and a studio. • Geology: A special highlight is the floor made of undulating sandstone. These are fossilized sand dunes that formed around 20 million years ago in a Tertiary sea. • History: The first mentions of a hermit’s dwelling in Räsch date back to 1448. The hermitage acquired its present form primarily through the work of Johann Dupré and Johann Liecht between 1680 and 1708. • Owner: The complex belongs to the parish of Düdingen, which had it extensively renovated in 2005/06 to save it from collapse. • Hours: The hermitage is closed in winter. ◦ April & October: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM ◦ May through September: 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM • Admission: Admission is free, but donations toward maintenance are appreciated. • Getting there: Parking is available at the shooting range in Räsch.
