Brazil was the only South American nation to send forces into combat in the Second World War, and her navy did most of the fighting. After German U-boats sank 35 Brazilian merchant ships in 1942 alone, killing more than a thousand civilians, Brazil declared war on the Axis on August 22, 1942 and joined the Allies. Her navy was small, with two old American-built scout cruisers, a handful of destroyers, and aging coastal craft, but she opened her ports to American forces, integrated her ships into the US Fourth Fleet, and went to work in the South Atlantic. Brazilian destroyers and PBY Catalinas of the Brazilian Air Force flew thousands of convoy and ASW patrols off the South American and African coasts. A Brazilian Catalina sank U-199 in July 1943. Other U-boat kills were shared with US units. Brazil also sent the Força Expedicionária to Italy, the only Latin American ground force to fight in Europe.
