The argument that Bismarck is the most overrated battleship of the Second World War is a credible one. Her entire fighting career lasted nine days. She sortied once, fought one engagement at Denmark Strait in which she sank HMS Hood with a single lucky penetration of a famously thin deck, took a fuel-tank hit in the same action that aborted the mission she had been built for, was tracked across the Atlantic, crippled by a single torpedo from a biplane that the Royal Navy had nearly retired, and pounded into a wreck the following morning by an old British battleship and a much older one. Her armor scheme was a recycled First World War turtleback design, her anti-aircraft battery was a chaotic mix of three calibers with no unified fire control, her rudders took 40 seconds to swing from hard over to hard over, and her propaganda value to Goebbels and the postwar legend has consistently outrun her actual combat record. The Iowa-class were faster and better protected. Yamato had heavier guns. Vanguard had more modern fire control. Bismarck's reputation rests almost entirely on three hours off Iceland in the spring of 1941.
