Building Our Rammed Earth House in Rural Portugal | Rural Life After 60
In this video, we share the story of how our rammed earth house began in rural Alentejo, Portugal. After travelling thousands of kilometres and visiting dozens of properties, we finally found the land where we wanted to build a new chapter of our lives. We explain why we chose this location, how an old ruin influenced the project, the challenges of planning permission, and why we decided to build using the traditional Portuguese rammed earth technique known as taipa de pilão. We also take you through the first stages of the construction, from earthworks and foundations to the first rammed earth walls built with soil taken directly from our own land.
