Down The Highway: Kim Shattuck Interview

Ian Harrower sat down with Kim Shattuck the lead singer and guitarist of the band The Muffs and was a member of the Pixies, playing bass for them in 2013. From 1985 to 1990, she was a member of The Pandoras. In 2001, she was a singer, guitarist and songwriter for The Beards, a superpop side project composed of Shattuck, Lisa Marr, and Sherri Solinger. The energetic and indomitable Kim Shattuck is the lead singer and lead guitarist of The Muffs. Growing up in Orange County, Shattuck has consistently lived in Southern California throughout her life. Shattuck started playing guitar at 18, inspired by Brian Setzer’s jazz and rock and roll playing for The Stray Cats. The music of The Beatles, Blondie, The Sex Pistols, The Kinks, and Joan Jett have also influenced her music. Kim studied visual arts in college and started out working as a newspaper photographer, but shifted her focus to music via the LA punk scene. Kim made her musical debut in The Pandoras during the 1980s, an all-girl band where she learned the ropes of being in a rock band. Starting out as the band’s bass player, she spent her alone time sharpening her guitar skills and learning to write songs that she would later bring to The Muffs. The increasing influence of hair metal in the late 80s and early 90s was the cue Kim was waiting for to start her own band.
