There are several theories on why the buildings are painted blue. Acording to one it is a Jewish custom brought here by Jews fleeing from Spain. Acording to another it's an efficient way to protect against mosquitos. Regardless, ever since the 1970s most of the houses here were painted blue, since locals discovered that this was the main thing that attracted tourists, tourism being the largest industry here. Chefchaouen means "look at the horns", a reference to the two peaks towering over the city.
