Security forces on high alert ahead of 30 June protests
Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia says the government will spend R600 million on additional security measures ahead of planned anti-illegal immigration protests on 30 June. These funds, which fall outside the police budget, will strengthen public order policing and bolster operational capacity. Following a meeting with police leadership, the defence minister and other law enforcement agencies, authorities confirmed that officers have already been deployed to identified hotspots to ensure public safety. Institute for Security Studies consultant and independent researcher David Bruce provides analysis on the state's preparedness and the challenges the planned demonstrations pose.
