South Africa is preparing for one of its biggest security operations in recent years as authorities brace for nationwide anti-illegal immigration demonstrations planned for 30 June. Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia revealed that police preparations alone could exceed R600 million, describing the expenditure as necessary to protect the country from any attempts to create instability or public disorder. The warning comes as tensions continue to rise around the planned demonstrations, which have been promoted by anti-illegal immigration activists who are demanding stronger border controls and the removal of undocumented foreign nationals from the country. Government officials say extensive plans have already been activated across all nine provinces, with KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape identified as areas requiring particular attention. Police, metro law enforcement, disaster management teams and intelligence structures are expected to work together to maintain public order. Cachalia stressed that while South Africans have a constitutional right to protest, authorities will not tolerate intimidation, violence, damage to property or any actions that threaten public safety. He also issued a warning that protesters should not arrive carrying objects that could be used as weapons. The Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster has also intensified intelligence gathering ahead of the demonstrations. Social media platforms are being monitored for threats or messages encouraging violence, while authorities are considering the use of drones to identify disruptions and assist with surveillance operations. Defence Minister Angie Motshekga confirmed that the South African National Defence Force remains on standby as a precautionary measure. Although current intelligence suggests peaceful demonstrations are expected, the military could be called in should the security situation deteriorate and if presidential approval is granted. Government officials have repeatedly referenced the devastating July 2021 unrest as a reason for their aggressive planning. That violence resulted in more than 300 deaths, widespread destruction and economic losses estimated at around R50 billion. Meanwhile, anti-illegal immigration campaigners maintain that their movement is focused on undocumented migration and not xenophobia. However, concerns remain after several recent incidents involving attacks on foreign nationals in different parts of the country. As the countdown to 30 June continues, authorities say their priority is preventing violence, protecting communities and ensuring that any demonstrations take place within the boundaries of the law.
