United States Marines General Mattis built one of the most influential military careers of the modern U.S. Marine Corps, rising from a young infantry officer to a four-star general. Mattis was known for aggressive leadership, battlefield intellect, and deep study of military history. Commissioned in 1972, Mattis commanded Marines in major operations including the Gulf War (Task Force Zipper) and later led the 1st Marine Division during the 2003 invasion of Iraq in the Iraq War. His leadership during the rapid push to Baghdad made him one of the most recognisable combat commanders of the war. Mattis would also be involved in planning strategy and operations during the first and second battles of Fallujah. Known by nicknames like “Mad Dog” and “Chaos,” Mattis became famous for combining frontline toughness with an intense focus on strategy, reading, and military doctrine.
