The Disastrous First Solo Everest Climb | Mountaineering Disasters
By December 1982, approximately 180 climbers had reached the summit of Everest. It had been nearly 30 years since Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay first stood on top of the world in 1953, and since then, expeditions had gradually chipped away at the impossible. Stronger teams, better equipment, improved strategies—step by step, Everest was being conquered - but it remained a deadly endeavour. Only a handful had dared to challenge it in winter. The first successful winter ascent came in 1980 when Polish climbers Krzysztof Wielicki and Leszek Cichy reached the top. But they weren’t alone. They had an entire team supporting them, fixed ropes in place, and a carefully coordinated plan. Even with that enormous operation, they barely survived the descent. No one had ever summited Everest in winter alone. Because that would be madness. And yet, in December 1982, Yasuo Kato did the unthinkable. He, and his Japanese team, climbed Everest in winter, with Kato reaching the summit on his own. It was one of the boldest, most extreme ascents in history—one that should have been legendary. But Kato’s story didn’t end with triumph. Because summiting is only half the battle. And Everest was waiting for him on the way down. Make sure to subscribe for weekly videos!
