Vintage "Heil" Hydraulic Pump Repair - Cotton Rope Seals vs. PTFE Graphite!

The old HEIL hydraulic pump on my 1959 Chevy Viking dump truck was leaking almost as badly as the PTO, so it was finally time to tear into it and figure out what was going on. After draining the hydraulic system and wrestling this unbelievably heavy pump out from under the truck, I cleaned decades of grease and dirt off the housing and discovered something I never expected… this old pump uses rope packing seals instead of modern lip seals. Cotton Rope Seals vs. PTFE Graphite. In this video, I completely disassemble the vintage Heil hydraulic pump, inspect the gears and thrust plates, remove the old deteriorated packing material, and repack the shafts using modern PTFE graphite gland packing. Then it’s time for reassembly, sealant, torqueing everything back together, reinstalling the pump under the truck, refilling the hydraulic system, and carefully adjusting the gland nuts while the pump is running. Best of all, the dump bed finally raises all the way up like it should without dumping hydraulic oil all over the ground. Another huge step forward for this classic Chevy Viking restoration project.
