Scott Birdsall is the founder, lead fabricator, designer, and driver behind Chuckles Garage, the Santa Rosa, California performance shop known for creating some of motorsports’ most unconventional and record-setting machines. A self-taught builder with more than two decades of racing and fabrication experience, Birdsall has built a reputation by blending artistic design with uncompromising engineering, turning unlikely platforms into world-class competition vehicles. Chuckles Garage, established in 2005, has become recognized internationally for custom builds that push beyond traditional hot rod and race car boundaries. Birdsall’s racing history spans multiple disciplines, including hill climbs, land-speed competition, road racing, and high-horsepower exhibition events. He earned widespread recognition through his participation in the legendary Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, where he piloted his diesel-powered creations against some of the world’s most advanced race machines. His motorsports resume later expanded to the Bonneville Salt Flats, where he continued his pursuit of speed and records. Birdsall has become known not only for driving fast vehicles, but for designing and building every detail of the machines himself. Among Birdsall’s most iconic builds is "Old Smokey," a transformed 1949 Ford F1 pickup rescued from near scrap status and reimagined into a twin-turbo diesel monster producing well over 1,000 horsepower. What began as a rough Craigslist purchase evolved into one of the most recognizable trucks in modern motorsports. Old Smokey captured worldwide attention through record-setting performances, including setting a diesel record at Pikes Peak and later establishing diesel land-speed milestones. He also expanded his record-setting efforts with a radically modified Toyota pickup powered by a 1,300-horsepower 2JZ engine, earning land-speed success at Bonneville and joining the elite ranks of drivers surpassing 250 mph on the salt. Scott Birdsall continues to embody the spirit of innovation, creativity, and fearless motorsport experimentation that has made Chuckles Garage an automotive institution. #landspeedrecords #chucklesgarage #amsoil #antigravitybatteries #hilux #toyotasupra #bmwe46 #pikespeak
