NDD manifests itself in grandiosity, a need for admiration, a lack of empathy, and a tendency toward manipulative behavior. A borderline personality may unconsciously be attracted to a narcissistic partner because they display outward confidence and strength that contrasts with their own vulnerability. However, the narcissistic partner, in turn, may use this relationship to reinforce their own pathological protective fantasy, where their partner becomes an ideal object, allowing them to avoid facing reality and fear of abandonment. Consequences This dynamic often creates a cycle of emotional instability and conflict, with both partners fueling each other's vulnerabilities and maladaptive behavior patterns. Over time, this can lead to emotional exhaustion, erosion of trust, and serious self-esteem issues for one or both participants.
