Execution of Auschwitz Nazi guard who burned children alive: Otto Moll

Otto Moll was one of the most notorious SS perpetrators to serve at Auschwitz-Birkenau, remembered by survivors as one of the most sadistic guards in the entire camp system. Born in 1915 in the German Empire, Moll joined the SS in the mid-1930s and quickly became involved in the concentration camp apparatus that formed the backbone of Nazi Germany’s machinery of mass murder. After early service at Sachsenhausen, Otto Moll was transferred to Auschwitz in 1941, where he worked directly under commandant Rudolf Höss. As the camp expanded into the largest extermination center of the Holocaust, Moll played a central role in mass killings. He supervised penal labor units, oversaw executions, and later became head of the crematoria at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Survivors described him as a man who took personal pleasure in cruelty, violence, and terror. During Operation Barbarossa and the implementation of the Final Solution, Moll helped organize gassings, shootings, and the disposal of bodies. He was deeply involved in the murder of Hungarian Jews in 1944, when hundreds of thousands were deported to Auschwitz. To cope with the scale of killing, Moll ordered open-air burning pits and personally supervised their operation. Witness testimony describes acts of extreme brutality toward men, women, and children. As the Red Army approached in 1945, Moll participated in death marches from Auschwitz to camps in Germany, including Kaufering and Dachau, where thousands more perished from starvation, exposure, and execution. After the war, Otto Moll was arrested by Allied forces and put on trial by a U.S. military tribunal. In 1946, he was convicted of war crimes and executed by hanging at Landsberg Prison.
