CMSNE On-Demand AI in Healthcare: What CM's need to know.
AI in Healthcare: What Case Managers Should Know This session provides a practical introduction to artificial intelligence in healthcare, with a focus on what case managers need to understand today. The first half reviews key AI concepts, including the evolution of AI, how generative AI and large language models work, and important risks and limitations. The second half explores real-world applications relevant to case management, such as chart summarization, risk prediction, and workflow support. Participants will gain a clear, balanced understanding of how AI can augment care coordination while maintaining clinical judgement and human oversight. Objectives: • Describe the basic concepts and terminology of artificial intelligence in healthcare, including the evolution toward generative AI and large language models. • Explain at a high level how generative AI systems function, along with their key strengths, limitations, and potential risks in clinical environments. • Identify current and emerging use cases for AI relevant to case management, such as chart summarization, risk prediction, and workflow support tools. Speaker: Allen Chang, MD, is a physician and clinical informaticist with a passion for the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in healthcare. After earning an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from Brown University, he received his medical degree from UMass Chan Medical School and completed his internal medicine internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Chang practiced for over a decade as a primary care internist while holding leadership roles in undergraduate and graduate medical education, care transformation, and clinician wellness. His work addressing clinician burnout sparked a deep interest in the potential of AI to improve healthcare delivery, efficiency, and clinician experience. He currently serves as the Associate Chief Clinical Informatics Officer for Artificial Intelligence at UMass Memorial Health, where he leads initiatives in AI governance, policy development, evaluation, and implementation across the health system. With a particular passion for advancing AI literacy and responsible adoption, Dr. Chang continues to practice clinically while helping UMass Memorial Health to integrate emerging technologies safely, thoughtfully, and effectively into patient care. This is a pre-recorded CMSNE webinar offering 1RN, SW & CCM credits. This program was originally offered live on 4/9/26 Special thanks to our event sponsor MCG: https://www.mcg.com/
